Effective data management and governance have become an essential business operation. Not only is it the right thing to do for your company and clients but increasing is becoming a regulatory or legal requirement. Data governance is a data management concept concerning the capability that enables an organization to ensure that high data quality exists throughout the complete lifecycle of the data, and data controls are implemented that support business objective. Many states and countries are implementing regulations around the protection of consumer data and mandatory disclosure for data breaches. These laws and regulations often require additional overhead expenses, changes to organization workflow and non-compliance can result in costly penalties. Data governance isn’t optional, it’s as much of a priority as maintaining a professional license, paying taxes, or maintaining insurance.

This course will review the major data government and privacy laws in the United States and abroad. Europe leads the way with the adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which leads the way for consumer-focused privacy. It was the first set of regulations that brought serious reform to how, where, and why organizations can utilize consumer data. In the United States, California signed the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which gave residents of the state the right to know what data is being collected about them, the right to have their data deleted, the right to opt-out of data collection, and right of non-discrimination for exercising their rights. Many other states are pursuing similar legislation to protect the rights of their residents. This course is going to look at these data governance frameworks and beyond. It will provide recommendations for compliance with both laws and industry regulations. This course will also discuss various tools that will help a company meet these new Consumer Data Rights.
