In the “AI Era,” professionals face a key question when they take on a writing assignment: Should they a) prepare a first draft on their own and then rely on AI to edit it, or b) use AI to generate a first draft and then edit it themselves?

In August 2025, the CEO of Anthropic weighed in on this question. Dario Amodei said, “I use Claude to generate lots of ideas. You know, I kind of use it as research. But so far, I've done the writing myself.” In contrast, asking AI to produce a first draft can be more efficient when writing a mundane or routinized document.

In this course, we will assess human writing (paired with AI editing) as compared to AI writing (paired with human editing), and then we will examine specific editing techniques for the modern writer.

AI provides writers with the superpower to rapidly turn rough drafts into finished documents. However, in specialized fields, such as accounting and finance, strong writers have an exact sense of what they want to convey, so any imprecision in AI prompting will slow down the writing process. During this session, we will comb through the prompting techniques that ensure writers are using AI to speed up their editing, polish their drafts, and elevate their writing.
