The presentation of financial statements under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) serves as the cornerstone of reliable and transparent financial reporting. This course provides a comprehensive examination of the rules, frameworks, and practical considerations that shape how organizations communicate financial performance and position to stakeholders.
The program begins with an overview of the FASB Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) guidance most directly relevant to presentation and disclosure, including ASC 205 (Presentation of Financial Statements) and other related standards that influence classification, terminology, and reporting conventions. Participants will explore the purpose and qualitative characteristics of financial statements, with emphasis on how presentation impacts understandability, comparability, and decision usefulness.
The course will cover in detail the required primary financial statements: the balance sheet, income statement (including multiple-step and single-step formats), the statement of comprehensive income, statement of cash flows, and statement of stockholders’ equity. Each section will emphasize key recognition and classification issues, such as current vs. non-current presentation, distinguishing operating from non-operating items, and the proper depiction of other comprehensive income. Special attention will be given to the notes to financial statements, which provide the essential disclosures that bring context and transparency to the numbers presented.
