Governance Excellence: Elevating Board Collaboration

Author: Blair Cook

CPE Credit:  3 hours for CPAs

This course explores the board practices and leadership roles that cultivate a more effective and more engaged Board of Directors. Many organizations have a Board of Directors appointed by a group of stakeholders to represent the collective or specific interests; however, a common challenge is making the Board of Directors an asset of the organization and not extra expense. A highly effective Board of Directors can be another point of competitive advantage for an organization to help it stand out amongst its peers.

In this course, you will learn about four co-operative board leadership roles shared among the executives and the directors that lead to governance excellence. We will apply the four leadership roles in two contexts that confront all boards – strategic management and risk oversight. These two areas will demonstrate opportunities for management to better engage with their boards to leverage the expertise and experience of the directors. It will also give participants acting in a director capacity, ideas for interacting with management to both fulfill fiduciary responsibilities and contribute insights to guide the direction of the organization.
