This course will explain the importance of working with and advising our clients on tax related divorce issues. We will discuss filing status, name change, joint & separate responsibility & liability. We will explore dependents and associated tax credits. Analyze retirement plans, alimony, child support, property settlements, allocating estimated tax payments, NOLs, and Capital Loss carryovers. Plus, other unique tax matters; splitting stock options, basis of property received in divorce including the deductibility of interest on financing to buy out a spouse, obligations to split income and expenses if filing separately in a community property state, and handling joint federal tax liabilities after divorce.
